Keto flu: what it is and how to avoid it

CarbClue Team2 min read

The "keto flu" is a cluster of temporary, flu-like symptoms some people experience in the first days of a ketogenic diet, caused mainly by fluid and electrolyte loss as your body adapts to burning fat. It usually lasts a few days to a week and is largely preventable with proper hydration and electrolytes.

What are the symptoms?

Common keto flu symptoms include:

  • Headache and brain fog
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Irritability
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Sugar cravings

What causes the keto flu?

When you cut carbs, your body sheds stored glycogen, and each gram of glycogen holds water. As that water leaves, you also lose key electrolytes — sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This rapid loss, combined with the metabolic switch from glucose to ketones, drives most keto flu symptoms.

How long does it last?

For most people, the keto flu lasts 2 to 7 days. Symptoms tend to peak early in the first week and fade as your body becomes fat-adapted.

How to prevent and relieve it

  1. Replenish sodium. Salt your food generously or sip salted broth. This is the single most effective fix.
  2. Get enough potassium and magnesium. Leafy greens, avocado, and nuts help; supplements can too.
  3. Stay hydrated. Drink more water than usual to replace what you're losing.
  4. Don't cut calories too hard. Eat enough fat to fuel the transition.
  5. Ease in if needed. Lowering carbs gradually over a week can soften symptoms.
  6. Rest and go easy on intense exercise during the first few days.

When to see a doctor

The keto flu is normally mild and temporary. If symptoms are severe, last longer than a week or two, or you have a medical condition, consult a healthcare provider.
